Fuori dal centro storico, lungo il Corso dei Mille nei pressi del Ponte dell’Ammiraglio, si trova la chiesa di San Giovanni dei Lebbrosi. Fu fondata nel 1071 da Roberto il Guiscardo e dal Conte Ruggero.
La chiesa si distingue per il suo aspetto di origine arabo-fatimita, adornata da cupole rosse. Sorge al centro di un giardino di palme ed è stata eseguita da maestranze arabe sui ruderi del castello arabo Yahia.
Nel XII secolo alla chiesa venne aggiunto un lebbrosario da cui ne derivò il nome.
L’interno, diviso in tre piccole navate, presenta un soffitto di capriate lignee.
Dopo alterne vicende, nel 1934 la chiesa ha subito un drastico restauro che l’ha riportata alle strutture originarie.

Outside the historic center, along the Corso dei Mille, near the Admiral’s Bridge, is the church of St. John of the Lepers.It was founded in 1071 by Roberto Guiscardo and Count Ruggero.
The church stands out for its Arab-Fatimite appearance, adorned with red domes. It was erected in the center of a palm garden, and was created by Arab workers on the ruins of Yahia Arabia Castle. In the 12th century the church was attached to a leprosarium, hence the title. The interior is divided into three small aisles and displays timber roof trusses. After dramatic renovations, in 1934, the church underwent a serious restoration that brought it back to its original structure.
